Just the Goods limited edition traditional yarrow and calendula salve (made with beeswax)
We have run out of stock for this item.
A classic in the practice of herbalism making it a staple in herbal first aid kits worldwide, this limited edition item comes thanks to extra herbal oil on hand which I made by infusing organic yarrow petals into olive oil for another project. Since this has been a highly requested item, I'm delighted to be able to make some available now.
- Yarrow has been used all over the world for centuries to treat skin and joint concerns thanks to anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, and tonic benefits that can soothe irritated skin while it's ability to reducing bruising and swelling can help with sprains. The Teton Lakota people call yarrow “medicine for the wounded", the Navajo people consider it a sacred Life Medicine, and the Anishinaabe people value it for purification. Interestingly, in the Victorian language of flowers, yarrow represents both war and healing.
- Calendula is often used to treat wounds, rashes, infections, and inflammation among other conditions because it contains compounds that can help to decrease swelling and promote new skin tissue growth most likely by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the affected area. It also helps new skin build strength through hydration and oxygenation, as mentioned above. In herbalism its recognized actions include reducing inflammation, controling bleeding and soothing irritated tissue.
- Olive oil contains a number of anti-inflammatory compounds including triterpenes and an antioxidant known as oleocanthal that have been observed to help with surface wound healing such as sunburn by assisting with collagen production to reduce the amount of time it takes for a wound to close. Another naturally ocurring antioxidants, vitamin E, helps calm redness and irritation in circumstances such as those caused by psoriasis. Relatedly, it's alpha-hydroxy acids stimulate the shedding of dead skin cells and encourage new cell growth. Just the Goods uses olive oil from Spain.
- Beeswax is anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and germicidal, all of which are helpful when seeking to care for skin that has been damaged due to irritation, burn, etc. I considered making this with vegan candelilla but ultimately felt it important to ensure this formula could be effective for use on slightly broken skin in the manner it has for centuries.
If you have any sort of blood condition, or liver or kidney disease, please consult with a doctor before using this formula. While some herbalists have experience using these ingredients to treat deep wounds, it's usually in the form of a poultice, not a salve. This formula is thus recommended for managing surface concerns such as sunburn, rashes, and other surface conditions. In the event of an adverse reaction, discontinue the use of the product and see a medical healthcare professional for appropriate remedial action.
This preservative-free product lasts longer when exposure to the elements (i.e. air, humidity, sunlight) is kept to a minimum. Please store in a cool, dark place and keep tightly sealed between uses.
